The final was contended by Chris Selfridge of Moyola Golf Club, last years winner and Robin Dawson of Faithlegg Golf CLub , Waterford.

Chris Selfridge , the 2013 winner, won on the 18th one up.

The North of Ireland Amateur Golf Championship is held over the links of Royal Portrush and Portstewart in July each year.

The format is stroke play over the first two days when each entrant plays a round at each course. The top 64 qualify for match play which is played over the next three days with the 18 hole final played on the afternoon of the third day of match play, the fifth day of the competition.

Some famous golfers have played in this competition in recent years - Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Paul McGinley, Michael Hoey and Garath Maybin.

Only Darren Clarke in 1990, Michael Hoey in 2000 and Gareth Maybin in 2002 have won the event.

Paul McGinley lost in two finals to Darren Clarke in 1990 and Gareth McGimpsey Bangor the following year in 1991.

Padraig Harrington also lost in two finals again to Garerh McGimpsey in 1993 and K Nolan of Bray in 1995.

Rory McIlroy never contested the final but broke the Royal Portrush course record, which still stands, during qualifying in 2005 shooting a 61 - 33 shots out, 28 shots back and 26 putts.

Local golfer Gareth McGimpsey won the event 5 times in 1978, 1984, 1991, 1992, 1993 and also lost in the final in 1997.

Alan Dunbar from Rathmore the club adjoining Royal Portrush won in 2010.

Graeme McDowell lost in the final in 2001 to Stewart Paul of Tandragee 4/3.

Gareth McGimpsey, Michael Hoey and Alan Dunbar went on the win the British Amateur Golf Competition - McGimpsey winning at Royal Dornach in 1985, Hoey winning at Prestwick in 2001 and Dunbar at Troon in 2012.
